You’re tough as nails!

You deal with things as they come and don’t stress over the small stuff. You are likely present-moment focused and have an idea of your own resources and/or resourcefulness. You understand that toughness is not external but internal. You excel under pressure and know what to do when things get tough.

The right amount of mental toughness is essential for maintaining a barrier against stress when striving for excellence. Too much mental toughness may result in an inability to ask for help. It can also be unhealthy if you push yourself past your limits. We know that pushing limits is important to achieving things you never had but not at the detriment of your physical and mental health. Unhealthy mental toughness can look like shame and guilt for resting instead of training, overtraining that leads to burn out or injury, and competing against others too much that ends in harsh self-judgment. Remember that to be tough is to also know when to rest. The opposite of mental toughness is not weakness, but harm so take care of yourself and strive for excellence with a mindset that protects your own welfare.

It is the essential component to performing under pressure—something jiu jitsu athletes know all about.

One framework to describe mental toughness is the 4C’s model by Clough & Strycharczyk (2012). See the breakdown below:
