Mental toughness is a skill as much as it is a trait and will be developed the more you commit to doing hard things, like training jiu jitsu.

What is mental toughness anyway?

To be mentally tough means to perform at your best in any situation, especially when encountering adversity and obstacles. It looks like maintaining enthusiasm despite a loss or remaining optimistic despite having a tough day in training. It is the essential component to performing under pressure—something jiu jitsu athletes know all about.

One framework to describe mental toughness is the 4C’s model by Clough & Strycharczyk (2012). See the breakdown below:
